A Few Things to End the Year

Happy New Year's Eve!
Plans here are Maple Pork & sweet potatoes (attempting a new recipe), movie and sparkling wine. Low key is best.  Welcome 2013.

Just a few random thoughts to end the year...

I admit,  I think the new TBS show "The Wedding Band" is pretty comical.  Not sure what to think about Brian Austin Green's eyeliner, but whatever.  Makes me giggle.

A few days into my new Christmas gift, I am obsessed with my "FitBit" to track my steps.  Get one.  It's fun.

I am also obsessed with "Fashion Police" on E!  Joan Rivers drives me crazy, but she is funny and the others are adorable.  I don't always agree with their fashion advice, but it's incredibly addictive.

What I do NOT need to be in love with, but unfortunately I am... "Nothing Bundt Cakes".... If you have one near year, check out the mini.  So tasty.  Scrumptious!  Lots of fun flavors to try.

I learned from Pinterest how to dry strawberries in the oven. Huh. Not bad. Taste kinda like red licorice.  Imagine that.  3 hours at 201 degrees.

A girl should buy herself fresh flowers often. I did just that today. Tulips. Happy New Year's Eve to me.

That's all for the end of 2012.  Watch the ball drop tonight and cheers to all.

Christmas Loot

Between Mom & Dad who still utterly spoil their 40 year old daughter (not complaining) and my work team, I am one lucky girl when it comes to Christmas gifts. Here is a recap of this year's haul:

Mini-Keurig coffee maker (finally!)- plus the cup to add my own coffee and avoid waste
The last of my Tiffany charms- bracelet is now full- thanks to the flip-flop (great choices Mom!)
Sex & the City shoe ornaments and martini glasses (this will be fun!)
Funky Betsy Johnson watch (it pays to compliment others)
FitBit (got these for Mom & Dad too- great to monitor steps!)
Books and movies
Omaha steaks (these are yummy!)
Lots of gift cards (all WILL be used)
Aveda products

No returns. Everything perfect.  Wow- I sure am lucky.  Christmas is more about the time with family and friends- the spirit of the holidays- but the gifts sure are fun too!
And I loved giving them as well- the giving is almost more fun.

Cozy Sunday- Time to enjoy some coffee, check my steps on my FitBit, watch a new DVD and relax with an Aveda mask :)
Ho Ho Ho!

Merry Christmas (post) and Happy New Year (pre)!!!

I think I was a good girl this year, but according to my blog, I was a bad girl recently.  No post for over 1 month.  My excuse this time is holiday in retail. Work, work, work.

Thanksgiving came and went.  Made my very first turkey ever. It was a success.  At least I liked it :) Went for the 17 pound organic grass fed.  Worth it, I believe.  Had a nice day with the Lil' Brother.
December was very busy with work travel and prepping for Christmas.  About 12 nights in hotels and many short flights.  Busy, busy.  All good on that front.

Very excited for Mom & Dad to visit for 5 days for Christmas. It was perfect- family time for the holidays the way is should be. No snow, but we loved being together in the Bay area.
Relaxation
Food
Wine
Egg Nog
More Food
Movies
Gifts
Games
More Food
More gifts
Yes, I am very, very spoiled.

A few others December highlights for this girl:

A snowy weekend in Park City (so pretty & serene)
Seeing a movie "Silver Linings Playbook" with a girlfriend (good)
Donny & Marie Christmas Concert (no, that is not a joke)
Hair cut & colored darker for the winter (ladies, you know this is a highlight!)

That about does it. Ready for the New Year to be here.  2013 sure to bring lots of sparkle.
More to come, friends.....
Ta Ta.

Grocery Obsession

I know this is a strange thing to have an obsession with, but I truly think I have become addicted to trying different grocery stores.

Whole Foods- for great produce, cheese, meat, soups, nuts, tapioca pudding, desserts, etc.
Trader Joe's- for some unique items- many of them organic and frozen
Sprouts- produce, bakery goods, dry goods
Safeway- for the staples and basics
Lunardi's- many of the above thrown in

Did I mention I also love Farmer's Markets?  A few good ones in Northern Cal.
I have been to 3 of the 4 above in the past 3 days. Just checking in to see what they goods are- and if I should try anything new.  As I said, strange obsession.

Just now at Sprouts, it was organic green beans, Turkish dry apricots (to go with the cheese I bought at Whole Foods yesterday), pumpkin loaf and onions for Thanksgiving stuffing.  Weird- I know, but fun.  I also find it comforting to pop in a pick up a few things- versus heavy loads of groceries all at once.

I guess if this is one of my worst habits, I could do worse.....

Preparing for Thanksgiving Dinner

This will be the very first Thanksgiving feast I prepare on my very own (yes, I am 40 years old, but I have many excuses- I have always worked in retail, others always cook, etc.).  So this is a big one.

Here is what I am thinking:

Ordered a nice, fresh, organic, free-range turkey. Yes, I know to remove the giblets and such from inside before I cook it.
I also ordered a pumpkin and amaretto cake. Yum.
I love cranberry sauce from the can- that is what I am sticking with.
I am excited to make some "veggie concoctions"- things with green beans, almonds and such.  This is where my creativity will come into play. Yeah!
My mashed potatoes will NOT have lumps.
My gravy will NOT be as good as Dad's. Deal with it.
My stuffing WILL be as good as Dad's (I hope). Because he will teach me how.
Jarrod will get to pick what kind of warm, tasty bread-like thing I make.  That will be fun too.

Most important, I can do it and there will be leftovers for days.  That is key.

Dinner will be served around.... oh let's 3PM or so.  Retail still. Must work that night.
Now, what about Christmas dinner..... Hmmmmm

Relaxation Does A Body Good

You can tell it's retail holiday time... I slept for over 9 hours last night and I still feel sleepy/lazy today (I'm sure the half a bottle of wine I downed before bed may have something to do with it too!)

Nothing very exciting to share these days because work consumes my time, but I can ALWAYS find some fun and thrilling stuff out there..... that is what life is all about.

A little more winery fun was had.  If you have not visited Acorn winery, I would recommend it. By appointment only, but great- and super friendly folks.

Halloween was lackluster for me as I sat in a hotel working.  But it was fun to see all the kiddie pics from friends on Facebook.  Oh- and I ate a few bites of chocolate cake with my soup & salad for my celebration :)

Feeling so bad for the folks who were devastated by Sandy on the East coast.  I watched the tribute last night- Go Jon Bon Jovi!- and donated to help. How awful.  So glad all my East coast buddies are ok.

Loving putting the Summer wardrobe away and pulling out my fave jeans and boots.  So worth the cool weather.  And a good time to shop for more!

Another good thing about relaxing weekends..... facial, pedicure and massage.... ahhhh.... that's all.

Fall 2012 TV

Sooooo excited!  It's that time again:  FALL TV LINE-UP 2012!!!

Every year, I get excited for the new shows.... even though less than 1/2 of them stick around....
Let's just get to it-  my 8 top choices for new shows this year:

1- Mob Doc
2- Partners
3- Go On
4- The New Normal
5- 666 Park
6- Nashville
7- Emily Owens MD
8- Made in Jersey

I admit, nothing smashing or any really great hits (like Revenge and Scandal from last year!), but some fun options thrown in there.

Mob Doc- I love Jordan Spiro from an old fave- "My Boys" (RIP)
Partners- Sophia Bush moving on from "One Tree Hill" (also RIP)
Go On- Anything with Matthew Perry is good with me (nothing has stuck since "Friends")
Normal- Getting the most hype- banned in Utah!
Emily Owens- I really like Meryl Streep's daughter Mamy Gummer- although her pilots never seem to stick

Looks like most start on the 11th- soon!
And I would be remiss if I did not mention the return if some goodies this year (along with Revenge & Scandal)..... just to name a few:

2 Broke Girls
Parenthood
New Girl
Modern Family
Hart of Dixie
Good Wife
Up All Night
Big Bang Theory

Thank you, thank you, thank you.... DVR!!!!  Love, love, love my TV!!!
Oh- and the Emmy's September 23!

PARK CITY!!!!

Whenever people find out I own a (small second) home in Park City, they always ask if I ski.  And the answer is always no.  I started to love Park City because of the Sundance Film Festival held every January (which of course is still the main reason!), but over the past 3 years, I have come to love so much more.  I had one of the best weekends here last week and I was just thinking about what I truly love about it here:

PARK CITY!!!

In the Summer....

Sunshine and mountain air
Sushi  and martinis outdoors at Blind Dog (although I do miss the fondue from the winter)
Hot air balloons that lift up outside my window in the morning (like right now!)
Park City has a Whole Foods
Silver Mountain Gym & Spa with a fab outdoor pool and BBQ (love that smell while at the pool!)
Vanessa who does my luxurious facials at Silver Mountain
A great outlet mall
A Massage Envy
Kneaders for delicious soups, salads, sandwiches, breads, desserts....
Rides and fun at Park City Mountain Resort
Many hiking trails
Chipmunks and cute little critters everywhere
Park Silly Market every Sunday
Main Street Trolley
A do-it-yourself recycling center that make you feel like your are saving the planet one piece at a time
Many Summer concerts (although no Goo Goo Dolls this year..... sad)
Shopping on Main Street when it's warm.... and ending with Java Cow ice cream- yum!
Outdoor eating on Main Street on the temporary outdoor patios they set-up on the street
Art Fairs every once and awhile

Ok, I think that's plenty. I simply love it here.  Cannot get enough of it.  Guess it's good I bought a place here:)
Thanks Park City, Utah for making me smile every time I take the exit off of I-80.

If You're Happy And You Know It....

Clap your hands.... I know

But that's not what I am talking about today.  Talking about being happy and what makes you happy. I know I am kind of a dork, but I keep lists of everything.  To-do list, budget list, medical check-ups, friends I need to see/call, places I want to visit, movies I want to see.... pretty much everything.

2 of my my favorites- I track days I exercise and days I am happy. Of course, there is a correlation.  Usually days I work out, I am happy. Imagine that.  And when I get enough sleep. And when I eat healthy.  Just the way it is.

I was thinking about this because someone asked me what the "smiley faces" were on the upper right hand corner of my Franklin organizer pages (yes, I still use a paper organizer- can't function without it- can't use the electronic version that I should these days- paper still works for me).  That is how I "list" my good and bad days.  Smiley faces for the good days and frowny faces for the  days that were not that great or just down right horrible.

The good news is, there always seem to be a ton more smiley faces than frowny faces.  I would say, on average, about 2-3 frowny faces a month.  Good news- it's August 26th and zero frowny faces in 26 days- that is a very good thing.  I have also exercised 18 days thus far this month. Another good thing.

The point is, we create our own happiness.  Yep, there are some things we cannot control, but for the most part, we make the decisions that create our mood, our happiness in life.  I guess I just choose to be happy.  As much as I can.  Music, movies, sunshine, my kitty, wine... all that helps too.

If you're happy and you know stomp your feet!!!! :)

More Vegas

Yep, in Vegas again....  seems like I have been here more often lately.  This time was also a combo of work and fun.  Work is over. Fun is here.  Just a quick update on the adventures thus far....In bullet point/question form as usual:

*  Why would a hotel elevator smell like mashed potatoes?
*  Is it a Vegas law that overweight girls must wear clothes 1-2 sizes to small?
*  Does a "long shirt" automatically count as a "dress" on the Strip?
*  Why aren't all Starbucks in the world open 24 hours?
*  Is it just me, or is Criss Angel over-the-top in love with himself?
*  Is there really such a thing as "dry heat" at 110 degrees?
*  What is the Sugar Factory thinking when they post pictures of "celebrity endorsements? The Situation?  Really?
*  Is it necessary for every casino bar to have a dancer's crotch at face level (bar top) after 10PM? Note to self:  shy away from those bars!
*  Following in Criss Angel's footsteps, while in the taxi, listening to Steve Wynn, can he really be involved with every single thing in Vegas and is he really "good friends" with every famous person who ever stepped foot on Vegas soil?
*  What is a "resort fee" anyway? I don't see any resorts on the Strip.

Ok, enough negativity:

*  Unexpected, the steakhouse at Treasure Island, TENDER, was delish!  Yum!
*  Criss Angel was entertaining- how DOES he do that!?
*  My first ROYAL FLUSH. Ever.
*  Cupcakes everywhere
*  Hotel gyms are still nice in Vegas
*  Never bored. Never.
*  TI has VERY comfy beds

Yep- still lots of fun to be had in Sin City.  Keeping it clean, my friends, but having fun with my ladies/

Food, Grub, Time to Nosh

Yep, it's a food post.  It's what people joke about Facebook posts: here is what I am having for dinner.  Joke all you want- I have had some pretty awesome food adventures as of late.  Wanna hear? If not, don't read me :)

Let's start a few days ago....
Saturday in Wine Country with the girls
Pork tenderloin and spicy corn at Dry Creek Kitchen
Ok, PT is a staple for me, but this one was amazing- spicy corn was a great accompaniment
Cranberry, veggie & wild rice salad from Big Jim's Market
                    Unexpected gem!  Tasty
Tortilla crusted tilapia with a little asparagus from the grocery store made at home
                     Cooked anyway, delish!
Cheerios and organic berries & organic milk at home
Ok., simple, but how can you possibly go wrong here?
Finally, happy dance.....   Whole Foods had Coconut Tapioca pudding tonight.....  yum, yum

I have not been this thrilled about food in quite some time. Healthy, delicious.  Good stuff.
Great restaurants.  Fresh grocery stores.  Love it.
And I did mention the other day, I am obsessed with Kind Almond & Coconut bars. So good!

Yes, I am in love with my food. It could be worse...... Not as expensive as my shoes :)

A Little Bit of Everything

Finished up work, watching "Royal Pains" on DVR and pondering what has transpired over the past 9 days.  Good stuff.  Here goes:

* I still will never quite get over the goofy way planes must fly in & out of Orange County
* I don't believe, no matter how much I try, I will ever be as pretty as the people of The OC
* A girl can never have enough sparkling wine
* There really is not such thing as a bad cupcake
* Try new things-don't just say you will- trying actually makes life more fun
* Sleep is NOT overrated
* Believe it or not,Carl's Jr.has the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had- yum!
* Milk does a body good, but exercise does it even better
* This is nothing much better than fun in wine country
* I take that back....  watching Olympic gymnastics come close
* Play outside of your "comfort zone"- you never know how fun it really can be
* I confess that "Call Me, Maybe" is quite catchy... cheeky, but catchy
* Multiple compliments on my shoes never gets old

Yep, that should do it for now.  Just a small list of rambling topics that have been part of my life this past week or so.
Have a super, duper Monday.

Olympics and More Olympics

Oh, how I love a little competition.  And right now, that competition is the Summer Olympic games!  For me, specifically women's gymnastics and men's swimming- those are my faves. Just hunkered down to watch a little swimming tonight- and some men's team gymnastics while I am at it.  I guess I can take in a little beach volleyball too :)  How can you not be a fan of Misti May and Kerri?

But, women's gymnastics has my heart. So fun. Later this week.
But another thing I LOVE about Park City.... the Summer skiers on the jumps into the water are fun to watch- and even cooler WHILE the actual Summer games are going on in London. Wow.  So cool.  Watched some with Mom & Dad while they visited last Summer, but these were better and special due to the Olympics taking place. A little winter games protrayed in the Summer in Park City. Gotta love it.

I was in Minnesota (can you say hot & humid!?) the past 2 weeks and now relaxing in Park City before I head to LA (or Newport Beach to be exact) for the week for work.  Right now-
Workout- check
Massage- check
Skiers- check
Now.... sitting on the couch, wine in hand, and Olympics games night 1 on the TV.  Thanks for hosting, Bob Costas.
Ahhhhh......

That's all for now. Enjoy the games.  Enjoy your weekend.
Go USA!!!

Perfect Weekends!

When I travel most of the week for work (So Cal last week and on the plane- thanks Delta for the 1st class!- to Minneapolis right now for this coming week), I sure like to take advantage of fun and/or relaxation on the weekends. This past (current) weekend was no exception.  This was one the good ones!

Friday night- tasty, healthy dinner at a new restaurant in Walnut Creek with my friend Jennifer followed by the eye-candy of "Magic Mike" on the silver screen. Yum (both the food and the movie!)

Saturday day- sleep in, exercise, watch TV, do "stuff"around the house.....   just lazy enough

Saturday night- Wine country; in this case last minute change of plans for an evening of cocktails and dinner at The Carneros Inn on Old Sonoma Highway- with my friend Jen (yes, Friday was Jennifer and Saturday was Jen).  Superb!

Sunday- exercise and prep to head to Minnesota for the week. While I don't really care to fly on Sunday for work, the good news is the opportunity to have dinner with another friend, Kari, upon arrival. Makes cutting the weekend short worthwhile.

Perfect combo weekend of everything I love!  And great company too. While I may complain a tad about having to travel so much for work, it really makes me NOT take advantage of the free time on the weekends.  Makes life worth living- and living it WELL!

I hope your weekend is just a grand!

The Joy That Is San Francisco

I am sitting here, typical Sunday... load of laundry in, laptop on lap, TV on, Casey napping by my feet....  yes, very typical Sunday...playing around on the Internet.  My goal today was to find all kinds of fun things to do in August and September in the Bay area. Wow!  I cannot believe how much fun stuff (much of it FREE) there is to do!?

Here is a sample:
Alley art fairs
Farmer's markets
Movies in Parks
Drive-In movies
Museums
Wine events (go figure)
Cooking events (a girl's gotta eat!)
Comedy shows
Boat trips

So much and so little time. Just recently, I finished rounding out July (and some of August) and now I am ready to move onto the next few months.

July has....

Trying new restaurants in the East Bay (thanks Jennifer!)
More wine events (thanks Jen!)
Concerts (thanks Vanessa and Rudy!)
And, of course, relaxation in Park City (thanks mountains!)

All of this, while I travel tons for work.  As you know, no travel this past week- but tons of work travel to come for the next 8 weeks. Nature of the job- hence the reason I love to plan as much "fun stuff" on weekends as possible.

In the words of the Bay area band "Train"..... thanks to the Bay... "Save me, San Francisco"! Yes, you do.
It's expensive here, but how can you NOT love it!? :) And remember, much of this is FREE!

Stories from a Crazy Traveler

As you know, I usually travel on average every week of every month- at least once. Sometimes just an overnight trip, sometimes several days in a row and once an awhile for weeks at a time. This week, July 4th week, I had the luxury of being at home the entire week.  I arrived home Monday evening and don't fly again until this coming Monday afternoon. 6 entire days and 7 nights in a row in my own bed.  Lucky me.

Of course I still had to work, but I also got a TON of personal stuff accomplished before work, on lunch breaks and on the nights I did not work super late:
Downloaded Ereader books
Downloaded pictures
Had some jewelry repaired
Dropped of some dry cleaning (and picked it up in the same week!)
Went to the bank
Got a mammogram
Went to the chiropractor
Hand washed some sweaters
Donated blood (or will be soon)
Hair cut and colored (again, will soon... the week is not over yet)

Pretty decent list if I do say so myself. Is this how the "normal" people live and get things done?  I know I am a bit kooky, but it's my life.
I know people with kids who work believe they have it hardest. I believe those of us who are single. travel for work non-stop and are never home to get things done have it even harder.  Just sayin'.

Ok, done ranting. Time to relax. To-do list is complete.  For awhile.

Happy 4th of July

Happy "America's Birthday" to everyone.... I am quite pleased that the weather is perfect in the Bay area.... one of the few across the country with record-breaking heat everywhere else. Stay cool people!

Not much planned here today.... a little work, maybe a hike, relaxing with my kitty, catching up on DVR TV, downloading some EReader books (No, Fifty Shades of Grey... been there, done that... and was pleased, I might add, but on to others- I am quite into celebrity biographies these days), and of course, what 4th would be complete without a little BBQ.   Meat is marinating now. Yum.

But, as I relax, I am thinking about my how fun the 4th weekends were as a kid.  Summers and 4th weekends at the lake cabin in Minnesota.
* Water skiing and tubing
* Pot luck meals (love the red, white & blue food such as jello salads, cakes, etc.)
* Wine coolers (yes, that is what I said- you did not read it wrong)
* Fireworks that are pretty darn impressive when shot off by relatives on the lake and don't cost $1 million
* Always getting a little sun burn (ok, now as I pray for now wrinkles or skin cancer, I wish I would have been better on this one.. don't we all wish we had listened!?)

Fun times.  Along with Labor Day weekend.  And Memorial Day weekend.  Labor Day was always my fave due to Grandpa's hayrides, but the 4th came in a close second.
Now, as an adult, especially when the 4th is on a Wednesday and not tied to a weekend as well as working retail when stores are open, I am just fine with low key and hoping I have enough energy to make it out to watch fireworks in some city park at dusk.

Reminiscing about fun childhood times, I am just fine watching Casey nap (what's new), watching the season finale of "The Big Bang Theory" (yes, I am behind) and playing around on my laptop until I decide to actually get up and do something that requires getting dressed.  Plus, my excuse it work calls and emails keep coming in and I cannot let folks down :)

I am thankful for my freedom.  Thanks America, soldiers and our founding Fathers.
Happy 4th of July to all.

Expect the Unexpected

I cannot believe it.  I was in Seattle for 3 days this week and it was mostly sunny and beautiful the entire time.  I know the rain is what makes the Emerald City "green", but I LOVED being there when it was bright with sunshine.  Good work done. Great dinners had.  Sunshine enjoyed.  (Although could have been warmer than 65 degrees- not complaining though).

Then off to Utah. Hotter that Heck.  For real. Wow.  And the worst part?  My A/C in my Park City condo died.  Good news?  Central Air guy was already here for someone else, so fixed before I melted working from home all day.  Soooo much better.

Batting 2 for 2 thus far.

Worked for 14 hours on Friday.  Then watched the Olympic trials for women's gymnastics.  Fun.
After traveling all week and working 14 hours straight on Friday, felt justified for more relaxation on Saturday and Sunday.
Gym
Pool
Spa
Couch
Repeat (without the spa today)
Oh- and of course- a little, just a tad, work sprinkled in both days- I just cannot get away.  I know I have issues.

Anyway, good news is on a roll for now.  Sunshine. Repairs. I will take what I can get.
Oh- and stop the Colorado and Utah fires please.
Ok, thanks.

Oodles of Fun Stuff

Sitting here on my couch a cool, breezy Sunday evening, after a very productive weekend, thinking about all kinds of fun, mindless stuff for the Summer to come.

First, productive.... I was so productive this weekend, I am not sure what to do with myself.
Laundry
July birthday cards prepared
Garden watered
House (reasonably) cleaned
Bills paid
Extra house keys made
Pedicure and manicure
Phone calls returned
Grocery staples purchased
Car washed
Home facial
Yep, I think I am caught up once again.  Feels good.
Plus extra sleep, TV, hike with a friend, dinner with a friend, hang time with my little brother.  Not bad for 2 days.

But, now I am watching the Fox (TV) 25th Anniversary show.... thinking about the oldies but goodies of my generation that are being remembered... 90210, Ally McBeal, The OC.....  Makes me think of the shows these days that I so enjoy and have blogged about prior... Did you know???...

Revenge
Smash
Homeland
American Horror Story
New Girl
According to People Magazine, those were the "must see" for this past TV season.  I would agree on all but Smash. Just was not a fan. This coming from a MAJOR Marilyn fan too. Good for Summer reruns.

Makes me start to think about films too.
Magic Mike
People Like Us
Some good movies coming out June 29.... this Friday. Looks like the pre-summer movie slump may be over soon.  I am game for a good flick. And some hot popcorn.

And then there are a few Summer concerts.
Sheryl Crowe
Colbie Cailaitt
And many more I am sure I will miss.  But I can always catch a few on "Today" and "GMA" on TV.

Trips to wine country
Weddings
London Olympics
Visits with friends across the country

Yep, looks like a fun-filled Summer. As a matter of fact, it officially just started 3 days ago, so I guess we are good to go for the next few months of warm weather and joyful activities.
Work will be hard, but I WILL be playing even harder. I promise.
Welcome to my exhilarating Summer o'fun!

Rewards for Rewards

I confess that I got a bit carried away with eating the past several weeks.... OK months.  I used my birthday, vacation and super busy with work and travel as excuses to eat as long as I was exercising. Enough is enough.  I know better than that.  I am "satisfied" with my body, but not "happy" with my body so time to get back in gear.

First, I know I feel better when I eat better AND work out.  Second, feeling better about my body is reward enough. However.... the reward is even better with more reward. I will reward my reward.

My ultimate goal is to lose 25 pounds.  If I go down 20, that is where I was at when I was at my best 2 years ago.  If I get there, I would be satisfied.  If I drop the 25, I will ecstatic.  That is the overall goal.

Here is what I decided.  Short term and long term goals. I made these decisions:

1- If I stuck it out for 1 week and dropped even 1 pound, I would reward myself with the new Kate Spade purse I have been eyeing (reward received this week!)
2- If I loose 10 pounds, I get a pair of shoes of my choice from Foot Candy (no price limit....OK, less than $700)
3- If loose 20 pounds, I get to spend the Tiffany gift card for lots of money that I have been holding on to for quite some time
4- If I get to the ultimate goal of 25 pounds, it's time for a shopping spree of new clothes... no holds bar!

See? The reward is the weight loss and health improvement and I will reward the reward.  Love it.
So far so good.  So far I love the warm weather, healthier food and continued exercise.
Off for the weekend.....  see ya.

Work, Work, Work

I have been working so much the past 3 weeks I have been very much neglecting my blog. Sorry blog. Working every single day. Lack of sleep. Always on an airplane. Not a ton of fun. This is why I am so excited to have a (fairly) open weekend to relax, hopefully hang a bit by the pool and drink some wine with friends. So necessary. Here is what happens when I work too much: I get a cold (hate sniffles). My beauty regimine slacks (I shall not go into detail here to avoid the obvious). I get feisty and kinda bitchy. Poor Casey misses her mama. I cannot keep a happy schedule to save my life. Some things just simply get missed. The good news is... Since I am a crazy, ridiculously organized gal, not much gets missed. In most cases, more gets done and sometimes things get done over-the-top because I am a tad bit anal. True. So, the last 3 weeks... (aside from work of course) A nice Memorial Day weekend. Lots of travel time to see friends in MN. Enjoying some good food (although wayyyyy too many calories and cocktails) due to the travel. Birthday with Mom. Ok. Not so bad. Work will still be very busy for the next several weeks. Time to focus on the fun stuff and think positive. Now time for some Chinese food and wine! Ta-Ta!

Sunday Accomplishments

By that title, you would think I have accomplished a ton.  Not so much.  But for a lazy Sunday after a week on the road for work and a Saturday in wine country, I really have accomplished more than I expected.
Slept in a little, downloaded some pics, ordered some new furniture, checked-in for my red-eye flight tonight, watched about 6 hours of DVD shows, finished up the final loads of laundry, sent a few emails.... Not bad 5 hours.

But, my main accomplishment today has been increasing my technological intelligence.  Seriously, I had no clue how much fun I could have with my new Ipad once I was actually self-educated on all of it's many wonders.  I could sit on the couch with this thing all day.  For real.. What took me so long!? I feel smart!

Only a few more things on my "to do" list today before I head to the airport at 10:45PM tonight. Sigh.  Big sigh here.  Ugh.  But for now.... I think sitting outside in the sun with my latest issue of US Weekly is on the agenda.

Happy Sunday everyone.

Deja Vu of Vegas

I am behind again... Please forgive me as I have sinned: it has been 2 weeks since my last post. I came back from a fabulous cruise and have not been back on my blog since. Shame on me. But I did just spend the last 7 (yes 7) days in Las Vegas and lived to post about it. I say déjà vu because I am quite sure I have posted some of these same comments to come in the past.

Here is what stands out to me most about Vegas this week:
The lobby at the Bellagio is very pretty
The smoke in Vegas is extremely annoying
Terry Fator is a great entertainer
People should look in the mirror (front & back) before they leave their hotel room
Not really sure how all those expensive shops pay their rent and stay open
Why does it take so long to check-in at every darn hotel?
The walk from the MGM to their conference center is ridiculously long
Bellagio has an amazing spa
Vegas makes tasty Sangria and Bellini's
The salsa at Diego at MGM is some of the best I have ever had
2 blocks in Vegas really equals 1 mile
Did I mention more mirrors are required?

That pretty much sums up the past several days in sin city. And I never sinned. Well... Maybe just once. And it was worth it.

Mid-Week Wonders

It's Spring in the Bay!  Love it.  Some showers and some sunshine. Happy enough with just that, but some other stuff makes it even better too:

*  How well my hairdresser can straigthen my hair and I love the way it looks for 2 days (until I try it myself)
*  New TV shows that pop up mid-season- like "Nurse Jackie", "Scandal", and "Best Friends Forever"
*  Cupcakes from Teacake Bakery in Lafayette (especially pink velvet!)
*  Lavender oil
*  Tons of daffodils
*  Arrival of a huge In-Style in the mail
*  Asparagus-stuffed chicken

And some lessons learned too!

Must use LOTS of "barrier cream" when going to spray tan (trust me, my feet are spotted orange) - thanks Mystic Tan
*  A little bit of baking soda when baking goes a longgggg way (again, trust me)
*  Lavender oil (see above) is great, but it leaves a mark (for real)
* Spanx fix alot- but not everything

Now it's time for a little Betty White.  Well, not a tiny-size Betty- just some Betty on TV. Humor is good on hump-day eve. G'night.

Small Luxuries of Easter Weekend

Looking forward to brunch on the water in Berkeley with my little brother for Easter tomorrow, which has become a tradition now, but before then, enjoying a day in Park City (at home #2) before I head back to the Bay (home #1).

Park City is very strange.... I arrive Thursday night so I could hunker down (yes, I did say that) in the home office and get some major work done yesterday (got it done- make the weekend even better!). Arriving Thursday night, it was clear and the weather was fairly nice. I woke up yesterday morning and it was snowing like mad. Yes, April 6. As of 5pm or so, it was gorgeous outside again. Sunshine and not a cloud in the sky- just as it is right now on Saturday morning. Love the changes.

So, with the sun shining, good time to head to the gym and then see where Park City takes me later before I fly tonight. Love this town.

A few plans... replant the bulbs from the gorgeous tulips Mr Big brought me 2 weeks ago, enjoy some leftover pizza that he bought us last night, and call a few friends, all while I get to look at the snow-capped mountains and enjoy the bright sun. Simple pleasures. Simple luxuries.

Happy Easter weekend to all. May you enjoy it how you wish- worshipping, with family, with the Easter Bunny or all of the above.

Rediscovering Whole Foods

I try to eat lots of fruits & veggies.... I try to limit the sweets (does not always work).... but I am NOT always good about where I go to get them. I love Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Lunardi's in CA, Byerly's in MN, etc. but I get lazy because Safeway is right across the street (Safeway is not bad- not ripping on Safeway- but the others are simply better).  I have been to Whole Foods twice in the past week and it reminds me how much I LOVE the place.

Produce, soups, seafood, all kinds of organic stuff, sushi, fresh salads.....and my recent faves:  Tapioca (with vanilla bean), hummus/black bean wraps and brown sugar/banana frozen yogurt. Yum!  So very tasty and so very different.

Unfortunately, not all locations have the same "stuff".  No tapioca pudding or wraps in Park City :( Oh well. Made me start a scavenger hunt for more exciting stuff.  Find this time:  Lobster Chowder for dinner!

If I can have tons of fun searching for healthy and delectable food, I am happy.  And it costs less then new designer shoes that I also happen to adore :)

Happy Thursday night to all.  Enjoy your dinners or midnight snacks!

April Showers...

April showers bring May flowers, right?  Maybe it's an April Fools joke.... it rained like crazy the past several days and now, April 1, it's as sunny as can be.  I guess we will see....

I am quite excited about April being here... many reasons. Maybe the first is that I actually slept kinda decent (better than usual) last night.  Always a good way to begin this new Spring month.  Let's see what else April brings:

* My birthday month! (Not that I am excited about turning 40, but still, love my birthday)
* Easter (I have always loved Easter- bunnies, brunch, baskets... what is not to love?)
*  Emily & Chad's Wedding in Minnesota- a very good friend (yes, a bridesmaid AGAIN)
*  Andi & Mark's baby shower- my best friend since I was 5 and their first baby
And last, but not least...
* My birthday cruise with Shannon!!!!  So excited for this- my first cruise ever, with a good friend, to tropical islands I have never visited, and relaxation that could not come at a better time

While times are stressful and a bit crazy, these are some wonderful things to look forward to in April.
Happy April to everyone in blogland- and beware of April Fool's pranks!

Land of Candy

I love Lafayette, California.  A quaint little area with nice restaurants, little shops, and great places to hike.  Today, after a went to be muscular-and-bone-adjusted by Dr Stacy, I popped in Powell's Sweet Shoppe.  Love it!

I am intelligent enough to know treats are much more expensive here- speciality shops like this, but who can resist!?  Fun, fun, fun!

Where Darien began today:
Pez in all shapes and sizes
Every flavor of Jelly Belly
Old fashioned candy bars (and by old I mean well before I was born as well as the 70's and 80's)
Gelato
Pop rocks, candy rings, and other fun "candy toyz"
Mints, mints and more mints
Every gummy known to man
Gourmet chocolate
Candy that oozes stuff (?)

Ok, I did not buy all of that- of course not.
But fun to look. And pretend I am Veruca Salt (better her than Augustus Gloop).

And the movies playing, music blaring and excited kids everywhere, the environment is addicting. Yep.

Well, I had fun.  The fun I had was worth the $20 I spent.
Did I mention they have Scottie dog shaped licorice? :)

I heart Powell's Sweet Shoppe!

Do You Speak Italian?

Soooo sleepy.... even after 8-9 hours of (kinda decent) sleep, I am still whipped. Stress takes it out of ya. But, after many long work weeks, I welcome some relaxing weekend time every week.

After Mr. Big so wonderfully showed up with some gourmet cupcakes and pretty blooming tulips, we went out to try a new place for dinner (thanks for the recommendation Vanessa!)- Al Dente on Main Street (previously Jean-Louise). Yum!

Cozy booths and nice servers to start.
Fresh bread with whole garlic cloves & balsamic, Ice Blue martinis and tuna carpaccio to begin the meal- all tasty- beyond our expectations.
Next up- Chicken pesto fettuccini for him & standard spaghetti & meatballs for me. Shared a little. Ate alot.
No room for dessert- way too full!

And.... meals and cocktails for under $100 including tip is pretty good these days. Gotta love that.

Yep, sleepy today, but nice, relaxing time last night helped. And new Italian joint I will definitely recommend and visit again.
I guess I should hit the gym before I get too cozy on the couch today.

Weekend Wind Down

Pretty low-key weekend in California... let's see...

Friday night.... DVR catch-up. Still in love with "The Good Wife", "The Big Bang Theory", "Cougar Town" and I think I kinda like the new "GCB". Rumor has it... it really stands for "Good Christian Bitches", but they are saying "Belles". Huh.

Saturday... sleep in (nice), gym, and a little fun out for St Patrick's Day. Nothing major- just a chance to get out on the town for some grub.

Sunday... sleep in (again), gym (yes, again), and then the fun of a pedicure and a Target run (I really do find this "fun"). Ending with some steak on the grill and more DVR.

Not bad at all. A little disappointment- Target no longer carries Senseo coffee pods. Bummer. My Senseo is working again, but the pods are missing. Amazon.com? Will give it a try. Huh.

More good news. Let's focus on the good news:
Republic of Cake- cupcake shop in Orinda. Fun. Yum. Give it a try.
Table 24 for dinner in Orinda. Also yum. Try too.
House is clean. Errands are run. Also make for a relaxing weekend.

Back to work tomorrow? You bet. Oh well.

What is Exciting in March?

February was an excellent month and I am really looking forward to April. Cannot say there is much very exciting about March.

A trip to wine country
A few good dinners out
Visits to Park City for relaxation
Celebrating St Patrick's Day
A trip to the spa

Ya, I guess that is some good "stuff".... but most of that, aside from St Patty's Day of course, happens every month. I see a trend of my high-maintenance behaviors (wine, food, travel, massage)... I know... I know. But as I always say- work hard and play hard too. That is for sure. I do work alot and I truly believe I "need" the spa and wine.

I am getting spoiled when all my vacations fall together? Sundance in February, Florida in March and my birthday cruise in April? I guess so. Well, after those months, summer will be here and I will be thrilled. Nice weather. New clothes. Time at the pool. More trips to wine country.

Ok, March does not seem so bad now. I will stop being a whiner. Stop taking a good life for granted, right, Darien.

Fabulous Weekends Like This...

Ahhhh... sitting on the couch, with Casey cuddling, doors open with 65 degree spring breezes drifting in, and DVR'd "Revenge" on the TV. These are the weekends I adore.

Started on Friday night after a good, long work week.
Healthy dinner of steak & fruit salad and soup at Tender Greens followed by the movie "The Vow" with my friend/neighbor Jennifer.
In my own comfy bed by 10:30PM.

Saturday continues with sleeping-in (does 7:30AM count as sleeping in?) and coffee from my favorite press, while I talk with a cute Mr Big on the phone for a bit.
Hanging out, catching up on more DVR, doing "stuff" around the house, and relaxing.
Hitting the gym, grocery store and a haircut (I love having my hair washed!)

Home tonight... more plans of nothing, but DVR and relaxation.

Sunday brings another wine road event in wine country- Healdsburg to be exact. Jennifer, again, leads the way in her Mustang and brings us to new wineries to find our new favorites. Love, love, love wine country.

And I love these weekends. After working hard all week, these are the times I relish. Some sleep. Some fun. Some plans. Some relaxation. Makes for a ton of enjoyment in the Bay area.
Back to "Revenge"...

More About Naples

I was just reminiscing about my wonderful trip to Naples and thinking what I like so much about it. Thinking... there is not a ton I do NOT like. But here are a few "cons" below the "pros"....

What I Love About Naples
Amazing weather (but see below)
Gorgeous beaches
Yabba Island Grill
Bayside Seafood Grill
Coconut Jack's (new one!)
Sweet Treats ice cream
Crispers soups & salads (notice a trend on the food?)
My parent townhouse on the lake
The lanai (I have probably overdone this one, but I just can't get enough)
Pools & lounge chairs
Endless fruity cocktails
Sunshine
Slow, easy, breezy relaxation

What I Do Not Like About Naples
Humidity
Sirens daily (that's what you get in a retirement town)
Eating way to much (ok, that has nothing to do with Naples)
The distance between California and Florida
The darn time zone change

Ok, that's not bad. At all. I guess you can see, the "pros" win.
Thanks Naples. Oh- and Mom & Dad too.

Naples Wrap Up

Oh!!! How could I forget~!? Mom and I also went to the spa for fabulous 80 minute massages on Wednesday.... maybe in my relaxed state, I simply forgot to add that to my blog post that day. Wow. Oh- and one more... Dad's grouper, veggies and everything else he made was wonderful. Great way to round out the day. Yummy. Thanks Pops. Sensational day in Florida.

So, onto the last day and a half.... Thursday- after another workout (to be sure I can consume as many calories as possible during each day) we made our way to Marco Island.... lunch on the bay at CJs (tasty blue cheese chips- I find them everywhere I go) and then some time at the beach. Nice beach. Last ocean day. Boo hoo. Water was warm enough for Mom to get in. That is a tough task. Mom does NOT like cold ocean water. We ended the last night at one of my favorite Naples haunts- Bayside Seafood Grill- upstairs, overlooking the water on Venetian Bay, outdoor bar with live entertainment. Great. That surely wrapped up a wonderful vacation.

Friday came quickly with one last breakfast out at Toast and some quick pool time (catching some final quick rays) before I had to head to the airport. Sad. And not looking forward to 8 hours on a plane. But, it went OK and now I am home. Rather easy trip, if I do say.

Naples was wonderful as always. This annual (hopefully more in the future) is always grand. Something about that place gets me every time. Some people believe it's "too slow"- but maybe that is just my style. Miami has it's time and place- but I am a slow-paced-Naples girl. Pics to follow soon.
Thank you Mom, Dad & Southwest Florida.

The Un-Planned Vacation- Naples

I have now been in Naples, Florida, with my parents, for the past 5 and a half days. This was meant to be a relaxing, unplanned, kick-back vacation. And it has been just that.

Here is a recap of what has transpired thus far:

Arrived Friday night to 75 degree plus weather and went out for a casual dinner
Saturday, slept in, went out for breakfast, hung out at the pool, sat on the lanai with a cocktail, and went out for seafood dinner
Sunday, slept in, went to the gym, went out for lunch on the bay, did a little sight seeing, back to the pool at dusk, and ordered pizza for a TV night at home
Monday, slept in, went to the gym, went to the beach, and went out for some appetizers and dessert
Tuesday, slept in, went out for breakfast, went on a boat cruise on the gulf, cooled down in the pool, went bar-hopping for a few cocktails, and picked up soups & salads to bring home for dinner
Today... slept in, went to the gym, went out to lunch, went to the beach and now sitting very relaxed on the lanai

See a pattern here? I love it. This is just what I need. Less than 48 more hours of this left and I have to go back to reality, but for now.... time still stands still in Naples. Sunshine. Warm weather. Exercise. The beach. Cocktails. Good food. Ocean air. All is well in Southwest Florida.

Thanks to Mom & Dad for providing this. A girl could definitely get used to this lifestyle...

Pre-Valentine's Day

As I sit on the couch with my coffee and cozy sweats on this lovely Saturday morning, I notice cheesy romantic chick-flicks, one after the other, on Lifetime and Hallmark for Valentine's Day weekend. I chuckle because I have always thought, "I think Valentine's Day is stupid. Just another Hallmark (ironic based on above comment) holiday."

But, I confess, I love the colors & hearts, the feeling of joy the holiday evokes, I do send cards to friends I love, I buy red-and-pink-foiled candy for my candy bowls... I just don't get the hype about having to go out for a romantic dinner or this being the one time you tell someone you love them or buy them jewelry- shouldn't that just be a random thing throughout the year?

Not trying to be cynical and I know love-sick-birds would say I am.... but I am a Birthday and Christmas girl all around. I am not saying I won't acknowledge the fun of Valentine's Day- just don't think it should be the one day of the year when everything else is forgiven and the one day love is pronounced. In my mind, that should be different random days throughout the year so you know it's true and not forced. That is true love, is it not?

With that said, I sure would love some flowers (just not cheesy, cliche red roses!) and maybe some candy :)
