The Day After Christmas...

I am such a kid on Christmas.... I keep a gift list all year long and Mom shops from it for the big day. Yes, I do appreciate the time with family, respect it is the day we celebrate Jesus birthday, and do not take for granted all we have in life. I reflect on what I am thankful for and feel lucky for all that I have. Those wrapped gifts beneath the tree are also on that list of what I am thankful for.

This year was great once again... (thanks Mom & Dad)

* 5th in a series of charms for my Tiffany & Company charm bracelet- this year a black stiletto pump shoe charm- so cute!
* Workout clothes from LuLu Lemon
* A new funky suitcase (black and white) for all of my worldly travels (ok, mostly work trips)
* Kiehl's products (LOVE Kiehls- ya know, the plain white packaging with the black print- great stuff- focus on eye creams this year- fighting the early stages of crow's feet!)
* And the fun this 'n' that stuff of books, water bottles, cute cupcake cases, etc. All the stuff you would never buy but love to get!

I simply love getting (and of course giving) Christmas presents. A big highlight of the year. The sad thing is, the day after, my new list has already started. Remember, I have a birthday in 4 months....

Time to go roll Swedish meatballs with Mom. Hope your Christmas was smashing!

Merry Christmas!!!

A very Merry Christmas Eve to all...

I am sitting on the couch, in front of the TV which is playing one of many football games (this one happens to be the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl), relaxing with the folks while we wait for Jarrod to return from work to begin Feast #1 for the holiday weekend- I am foregoing our tradition of Christmas Eve homemade pizzas and I am trying slow-cooked BBQ tri-tip sandwiches with picnic fixins'. Something new for Christmas 2010! Reviews come later.

I am quite relaxed while Mom is curled up on one end of the couch, Dad on the other, and me hogging the love seat with laptop in lap (how ironic), Casey cuddled up next to me, and a nice glass of Pinot Noir glistening against the roaring fire (nope- not a cliche- this is for real). Reminiscing about what I adore about Christmas since I was a kid:

* I fondly remember Swedish meatballs and homemade rolls on Christmas Eve at Grandma & Grandpa's house in Minneapolis
* The famous Candlelight service at church before heading to Grandma's- best church service of the year- so pretty
* Over maximizing the capacity of Grandma's basement with every relative we cram in plus about 10 wrapped gifts per person under the 3 foot fake tree that Grandma shoved in the closet- ornaments, lights, and all- every year
* Those yummy Kemp's ice cream treats shaped like Christmas tress and Snowmen heads that are only available during the month of December- love those!
* Gifts in the stocking from Santa on Christmas morning that still continues these days (yes, it IS from Santa... he does exist and he does know what I want for Christmas)
* Getting Hallmark ornaments and PJs every single year
* Insisting we watch some cheesy holiday movie every year on Christmas Day- don't forget the 24 hour repeat of "A Christmas Story" on TBS every year, but I am partial to "Elf" these days
* Shopping with Mom the morning after Christmas as early as possible (but not as early as Black Friday!) to buy the 50% off crap I really don't need, but MUST have- starting at the Target holiday isles!!! Gift wrap, bows, tape, tinsel... anyone?
* And my favorite Christmas memory for the past several years.. heading to Tiffany & Company the day after to have my new charm added to my charm bracelet... it's not even half full and it's BEAUTIFUL!!!

In California I cannot say "Oh the weather outside is frightful...", but I can say... MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!!! HO HO HO!!!

Fa La La La Lifetime

I have another confession to make: I'm cheesy (as if you didn't know that already if you a) have read my blog or b) know me at all). This time it revolves around super cute holiday movies.

B (or C or D) list actors, incredibly sappy plots (well, not sure if they could be defined as "plots", more like "attempted story line") and very unrealistic over-the-top happy endings.

I wonder if anyone has taken a count of how many holiday movies there are each year? Hundreds I am sure. As I mentioned in my previous post- Lifetime, ABC Family, Hallmark Channel, etc. all house these holiday movies. But the focus of this blog is simply Fa La La La Lifetime. I know, I just like to type it. And say it out loud.

Right now I have on the screen of my Geek Squad mounted HD Samsung (thanks Best Buy) the film (again I use the term film loosely) "All I Want for Christmas". This one covers all of the stereotypes:
* Virtually unknown actress (she was a killed off supporting actress on Dawson's Creek years ago)
* Set in some small town that always has an over-the-top Christmas theme
* Some bah-humbug characters
* Some hot guy
* Some funny, heart-loving character you just can't help chuckling at
* And, of course, the angst-ridden story line about "saving Christmas", "finding love", or something similar

Ah, the joys of these fun flicks. Yes, they are crazy cheesy, sappy, goofy, and could be described as "tear jerkers" by some, but I love 'em each year. They are all the same and some I watch year after year- think updated versions of "A Christmas Carol"- one from a few years ago with "Facts of Life" (tomboy Jo) fame Nancy McKeon- "Comfort and Joy" and a new one tonight with Christina Millian- "Christmas Cupid"- even the titles make me chuckle.

Time to sit back, relax with some fresh pressed coffee, and enjoy a little holiday cheer before I hit the gym. As a matter of fact, this holiday cheer just may make the treadmill run go by just a little faster with headphones and the treadmill TVs... Fa La La La Lifetime my friends. 'Tis the season!

ICE CREAM!!!

Yep, this is going to be a short post all about ice cream. Just ice cream.

Got me started due to the fact that I purchased the annual Peppermint Stick/Candy Cane ice cream today that, of course, only comes out during the holiday season. That got me thinking of my love of ice cream and my faves. Oh, how I adore ice cream (almost as much as cupcakes).

Phish Food. Ben & Jerry's.
Peanut Butter Chocolate. Haagen Daz.
Vanilla Cherry. Haagen Daz.
Daiquiri Ice. Baskin Robins.

Now.... very sad... but years ago, around Valentine's Day, Baskin Robbins had this absolutely amazing Hunk O'Cherry Burning Love. Had it once. Or twice. And have never seen it again. Boo hoo. Oh how I have missed that hunk.

Bad news? Most of this ice cream is loaded with fat and calories.
Good news? Peppermint/Candy Cane only has 120 calories. Yippee.

There ya go. Left smarter (about ice cream) than you came.

Tasty Treats

Yvette, Colleen, Jen, Dave and me at Triptych

This one is for Kristy Knapp... :)

I had one of the BEST dining experiences last night in San Francisco. I took some of my work team out for dinner in the city- Triptych.

One word sums it up. WOW. Just simply wow.

Let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. I did some research, like usual, on places to go with reasonable prices, a variety of options on their dinner menu, and most of all exceptional desserts. Yum.

Triptych is located on the border of a not-so-great neighborhood off of Harrison downtown, but it's fine once you get there and street parking is all around. Right across from a laundromat/bar/comedy club (yes, seriously- how fun is THAT!?) The place itself is fairly small, but had art-theme decor with local artists on the walls. The staff was extremely friendly- 1 guy liked just like Actor Jason Ritter (John Ritter's son) and he agreed with me when he looked on the internet to find out who Jason Ritter is... He was flattered.

A group of 5, we decided to order 1 of every appetizer to share:

Sweet Potato Fries

Bacon-wrapped shrimp in white beans

Artichoke and mushroom ravioli

Ahi tuna with crisps

Chicken drummies

These, along with a darn tasty white wine I had never heard of, an even better sangiovese for the red girl and another magnificent malbec. Cheers!

Entrees included the pork tenderloin special with green beans, carrots, and mashed potatoes (me), the salmon special (2), and their pride osso bucco (2). There were sighs and groans made by all as we consumed with delight.

We ended the meal just as we did with appetizers: 1 of each!!!

Molten chocolate cake

Pear tart

Gelato ice cream sandwich (my very favorite choice!)

Triple layer chocolate mousse

The scary part is the serving sizes weren't so ridiculously huge that I was not stuffed to the gills when we left; just simply sufficiently full and very satisfied (not sure if that sounds like a restaurant review or a sex ad???)

One of the surprise add-on's to the evening was the restroom. Decorated over the top with 70's paraphernalia- the best being the Charlie's Angels posters, pics, etc. but I would be remiss if I did not mention the photos of Saturday Night Fever and Kristy/Jimmy McNichol. Ha! Hilarious and so fun to observe while you "take care of business".

Overall, nothing bad to say about Triptych. The atmosphere, staff, food, and yes, bathroom, were all amazing and we will definitely be back. For sure. Bring on the apps, dessert, and kitschy bathroom of Triptych!

December Delights

Saturday night. Fire glowing in the fireplace. Just had a little vanilla bean ice cream with red & green sprinkles in spirit of the season. Casey cuddling next to me. Cheesy Hallmark channel Christmas movie on TV. These are the things the holiday season are made of.

Got me thinking of what December is made of for ME. Lots of things, actually. Just a few to share...

Above mentioned- Christmas movies on TV...Lifetime, ABC Family, Hallmark...yes, sappy- but so required this time of year. Right now it's "Farewell Mr Kringle" and next up is "Christmas Cupid". I know... eyes are rolling.

Can't get enough gingerbread cake from Starbucks. Yum! Fat free and low calorie, right!? You bet. I have not yet forgone my "tall coffee, black" in exchange for the gingerbread latte or some other calorie laden festive froth, but I just may one of these days...

Comfy, warm clothes. Specifically flannel shirts. Have you checked out US Weekly, In Style, or other rags lately? All the celebs are wearing them- often with scarves and skinny jeans, of course. I must say- the J. Crew version are my fave this season. Comfy, cute and trendy without being "over trendy".

Christmas music 24/7 on the "light" radio stations. Love that! Or, my many, many Christmas CDs. While I am very partial to all 6 or more Amy Grant Christmas CDs I own, I also believe The Blenders, Jewel, and Taylor Swift are pretty good. 30-plus days of holiday lyrics are enough to keep the spirits high until the next year.

Ugg boots. Again, eye rolls here. But I love the comfy boots- especially in December- when the ground is cool and, in some cases, covered in the white stuff (think Utah and Minnesota for this California girl). Black, brown, suede, or leather. I love 'em. So cute with jeans. Hmmm.. maybe matched with that J. Crew flannel....

Those are a few of my favorite December things. Oprah nor Julie Andrews I may not be, but hey.... a fun blogger am I!

Until next time, ho ho ho...

More Holiday in Retail

I have been thinking about what to blog about these days... nothing very exciting happening outside of work- since there is so much of it for the season. Work, work, work. So, I guess I should tell you about the RV trip from Utah to Idaho. The idea sounded good at the time...

#1- Do not take for granted good windows that keep the wind and noise out
#2- Never ignore those signs that warn you about height restrictions

#1.... should probably liken an RV to driving your house down the highway at 70 miles per hour. Think it would be a little loud? Ya. You were correct. The windows rattled. The doors quaked. The entire floor wobbled. Crazy. 6 hours was plenty. Good thing I like those people.

#2... I swear we did not know the AC sticking out of the top that we could not see made the entire RV more than 8'5" in height. The loud, pounding BOOM BOOM BOOM as we drove into the parking lot proved us wrong. Darn it. The most fun was watching Shane climb on top to estimate the damage and not able to get down. Hee hee. That was enjoyable. (He did make it down in one piece eventually!)

Team building at its best I guess. Playing poker with Laffy Taffy was a highlight. I came out even.
Yep, RV with the work gang is something I experienced and never plan to experience ever again.
Good night.

The Calm Before the Storm

Before the "holiday craze", Emily came to visit me in Park City for the weekend. While we didn't have the best weather, we had tons of fun!

Friday we shopped a little, relaxed and then hit the town for a night that I was a little more wild (but so fun!) than I expected. We were the hit at No Name Bar!!! Shots (yes, seriously shots) kept coming from who-knows-where (so said Jose the fun bartender).
Saturday we took our own sweet time (dictated by the shots!), continued to relax with 90 minute massages, and ended with a tasty BBQ dinner and a Park City Film series movie.

Sunday ended with a small hike in the rain and another good lunch before we departed. Boo hoo.

I love to show off my favorite place to friends and visitors. Park City seems to bring out different "emotions" and "actions" in everyone.... let's just call No Name Bar the Las Vegas of Park City for me that night.

Holiday in Retail....

It happens every year. It never changes. Long hours. Tons of stress. Fun. Crabby people. Christmas joy. To Do lists that never end...

Holiday. In. Retail.

For me, this is year #15. Wow. You would think I would learn. Well, actually I have in some areas. I know from November 1 to January 1, I pretty much do nothing but work. When I do have some time off, all I want to do it sleep. Or lounge, Like I am doing right now. On the road for the past 5 days straight- now home- on the couch in sweats with a slice of pizza in one hand and the remote control in the other.

Why do we do it??? Well, answer in this case is simple really; it's my job. No choice. But what always amazes me is how surprised I get every year. You would think by #15, I would have it down pat. Nope. Always new excitement that pops up. Always crazy stories to share.

You are probably wondering why I would post such comments... simply to say, I may be frazzled, I may post some weird stuff over the next several weeks, and if I use foul language or start to speak in tongues, you will know why. It happens.

Bring on the long lines. The Christmas carols. The gift shoppers. The stockings. The upset employees. The Christmas photo cards. The fighting over "that product". The holiday TV specials. Yep, it's all worth it. 5 days down... about 55 to go. Yippee.

Prepare for interesting posts to come!

Florida Vacation Highlights!

Some details from the much anticipated Naples, Florida vacation with the girls... Vanessa and Jennifer to be exact. Trip was fantastic! Weather was perfect, beach was sensational, much needed relaxation was key, and food and drinks were flowing!

In addition to the above mentioned relaxation, we accomplished a ton. A few beach visits, pampered at the spa, fruity cocktails, a day trip to Miami/Southbeach, alligators in the everglades...

Miami for 1 day and night was all we needed- great people watching on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. Ended the night with dinner at Lario's owned by Gloria Estefan and partied it up at Mango's down the road courtesy of Shawn (above).

Some of our great finds.... Riverwalk dock restaurant at Tin City for scrumptious lunch and cocktails (cherry rum lemonade was the bomb!), the beach bar at La Playa served up some seriously strong cocktails and some kobe beef sliders, and Yabba Island Grill for some delightful seafood ended the trip on our last night. Super food to nosh on and some of the yummiest cocktails ever.
6 full days was simply perfect. More pics to be posted next weekend. But up next, continuation of the vacation with Emily visiting Park City starting tomorrow!

Park City Wine School

I have been meaning to try the Fox Park City School of Wine for quite some time. It is a 45 min- 1 hour course at an amazingly beautiful resort at Deer Valley where a group of 20 or less get to sample 5 wines (depending on the "theme" of the night) and spend some time learning about the "5 S's"- Sight, Smell, Sip, and Savour. For me, BIG focus on the sip and savour! :) And it's fun. You get stars for answering questions and detention for other "mis-haps". Ok, more "cute" than so much "fun" for that part of the class.

This Friday we made it. First ever Park City School of Wine experience. The theme was Wines of the Pacific Northwest- Oregon and Washington wines. We tried a Pinot Blanc, a dry Riesling (BIG surprise), a Pinot Noir (my fave), and 2 Cabs. Before each taste, we talk about the details and after each taste, share thoughts. Kinda interesting- not super long and drawn out, so well worth the time. At the end, everyone grades each wine. Mine were C, B, A, B, and B respectively.

My fave of the night (go figure) was the Willamette Valley Vineyards 2009 Whole Cluster Pinot Noir. What did I learn? They don't just use the grapes- they put the whole cluster of grapes- stems, leaves, and all- into the vat. Really good. It received 87 pts with Wine Spectator (who really cares as long as it tastes yummy, but good to know for you wine snobs out there) and the best part- it's only $15.99! Bad news? Went to 2 PC liquor stores yesterday and they were both out of stock. Boo hoo. Next time.

Up next... a wonderful surprise. The Dry Riesling. Now, like most wine connoisseurs, we only drank Riesling as wine-virgins (or in Germany because you just must) along with White Zinfandel, Boone's Farm, and/or the infamous boxed wines. Well, THIS dry Riesling was just that- very dry and very good. Totally unexpected. Give it a try. Chehalem 2007 Dry Riesling. $19.99 a bottle.

A fun, and educational, way to spend a pre-dinner Friday night for only $20. School is on "holiday" (or teacher conferences as we were told) for the month of November, but back in December and January. We will be back for sure. For now, go buy some wine and enjoy!

More Mom & Grandma Visit Fun

I posted a few pictures the other day, but here is more detail about what we did in amazing PARK CITY last weekend...

Friday, I picked them up at the airport and we went to a great restaurant that Shane introduced me to- Au Natural in Salt Lake City. We had some yummy healthy, natural food and then went to Tai Pan Trading Company so I could pick up some Halloween decor for the condo. Once we got to PC, we hung out for a bit, watched a movie, and trekked down to good ol' Main Street where we shopped and had a BBQ dinner at Bandits. Fun!

Saturday was a busy day. We hit some major spots starting with watching the Nordic skiers practice jumps into the water (while wearing skis) off the ski jumps at Olympic Park. Next up was Park City Mountain Resort where we took the 1 hour chair lift ride to the top. Saw the double-black-diamond runs. Wow. Can easily say I will NEVER ski those. Then came a drive through The Canyons, Deer Valley and then made our way to Sundance Resort. While there, we did alot of walking of the grounds, a little more shopping, and ended with a great dinner at The Foundry Grill that was final with a shared banana split! Great and (no pun intended) filling day!

Sunday we made our way to Main Street again for the last day of Park Silly Festival- a Sunday street fair with arts, food, and fun. We shopped a tad more- and then parked ourselves outside at Doogan's Bar Grill to eat our last meal for the weekend and do some people watching. Super way to end the visit.

Very nice time with Mom and Grandma... packed tons into 48 hours! Loved the opportunity to share my lovely Park City with them... Who is up next? Oh- that would be Emily in October. More fun to come...

August in Review

It's Sunday morning, 2nd in September, sitting here with a hot mug of coffee, the sun is shining, and I am watching a parade of hot air balloons over the mountains outside my window in Park City. Relaxing weekend. I needed it. Looking at my Facebook posts over the past few days... thinking about 9/11, the recent tragedies that have taken place, etc. Being thankful for what I have. Yep, thinking I am pretty lucky and reminiscing about the great month of August.

What did it hold...

A visit from The Flanery Girls (photos were posted earlier)- great weekend filled with food, drinks and shopping in Walnut Creek- a limo-wine-fun-filled day in Napa- fun in the city with China Town, Union Square, sushi- and crazy times in the Castro. Sue, Kelsey, Maggie and I had an exceptionally great time on the go all weekend long. I love San Fran visitors! Places I recommened: Sosa tapas bar in Walnut Creek, Va Da Vie (always!) also in Walnut Creek, Foot Candy for sassy (yes, expensive too) shoes, and last but not least- Blow Fish sushi in the Mission in San Fran. Great haunts to check out...

The next week I joined the Utah Best Buy folks for an off site in Park City. Now, I know I live here PT, but the event was held at the Waldorf Astoria in The Canyons and it was incredible- so gorgeous. I did not stay there at night- but I did enjoy the amenities, ambiance- oh- and the yummy cocktails at the Spruce Bar :) Every day I enjoy and fall in love with Park City more and more and...

The other 2 highlights were concerts. I have been slack on my concert going trips. One of my major loves in life. Well, August held 2. First up was John Mayer with Dan at Shoreline. Not the hugest John Mayer fan in the world, but his talent is limitless and his jazz skills on the guitar are crazy- especially when he does Stevie Nicks and Paul MCartney covers. 2nd was 1 of my 2 favorites in the world... GOO GOO DOLLS at Concord with Jennifer. LOVED it- as always. I can never get enough of Johnny Rzeznick and his boys. Gets me every time... Let's hope for more live concerts to come. Rumor has it I have someone fun to see in September... Stay tuned.

It was a great month- well, they all are- when you live life to it's fullest and not take for granted what you have to live for. I always tell myself, I love my job and I am very lucky to have it, but I work to LIVE, not live to WORK. Very easy. Be good at it and work hard. Stay true to it people.

What I am very excited about is so many fun times to look forward to for the rest of the calendar year... great events, vacations, and holiday stuff to come! But FIRST, let's be thankful for and enjoy this beautiful Sunday in unbelievable Park City, Utah.

MN State Fair Baby Farm Animals

Short and sweet, but I could not resist... baby farm animals at the MN State Fair! Top is a baby lamb that was born 4 hours earlier and below the lamb is a baby goat that was born the day prior. So cute! I wish I would have gotten pics of the baby piglets... so very tiny!
Aside from the Bacon and Cheddar Fried Mashed Potatoes on a stick, this was the highlight of the fair :)

Fall TV Premiers!

I figured Emmy Award Sunday was a good time for a post about the new FALL TELEVISION PREMIERS! I love this time of year. And I love my DVR so I can catch up on the fun stuff when I get back from traveling like a crazy woman. Nothing like running through a 60-minute show in 40 minutes after fast forwarding through the commercials. Love technology!

First off, let's talk about was was cancelled this year (which makes me sad of course- but really not to many were cancelled on my list):
Mercy
Eastwick (ok, not that good, but kinda fun- this one was expected)
Accidentally on Purpose
Cold Case
Ghost Whisperer (I admit- I love Jennifer Love....)

According to the "news", there were 84 cancelled this season, but those are the only 5 I will miss- and of those 5, only 2 or 3 that I will REALLY miss :)

What's new?:
Law & Order type dramas it seems--- don't get me wrong, I liked Law & Order, but only so much you can deal with these shows. Here are MY new faves debuting in September-

Running Wilde (think Arrested Development meets Felicity)
Better With You (Joanna Garcia is a cute, fun actress)
My Generation (social media junkies should love this)

I believe that's about all for the newbies for me. I may give a few of the L&O-esque types a shot, but we will see. With my faves returning, my DVR schedule will be very full. Here are my faves returning:
The Good Wife (probably one of the best)
Parenthood
The Biggest Loser (can't get enough Jillian, Bob, and the recruits!)
Modern Family
Cougar Town
Grey's Anatomy
Private Practice
Big Bang Theory (some great writing!)
Brothers & Sisters
Two & a Half Men (and despite Charlie Sheen and his issues, still some of the funniest writers out there!)

Let's not even get started on the premium channels. HBO and Showtime have some amazing shows that are off the Fall-premier schedule.... most of these are simply the best:

Dexter
Entourage
True Blood
Nurse Jackie
US of Tara
Weeds
The Big C

I love TV. It's my escape from busy life. Aside from the premium channels that have already started, the "big" season starts September 1st- with America's Next Top Model (I know... I know...) and ends with the best, The Good Wife, on September 28. It's going to be a great Fall for TV on the Darien DVR!

Eat, Pray, Love

I saw the film "Eat, Pray, Love" last weekend (no, I have NOT read the book) and it had a strong impact on me. I wish I could go away for 1 year to great places like Italy and Bali, but I can't, so I decided to do my own version.

EAT: There are wonderful restaurants up and down Main Street in Park City, Utah. I have my favorites, but there are many I have never encountered. I have decided to start at the bottom and eat at every restaurant in order- up and down until I hit every place. I am going to experience the good eats of Park City as an experiment for myself. How fun! And tasty! This part will be VERY exciting. Joiners are welcome.

PRAY: Well, I pray every night anyway, so I am going to add daily meditation. Not sure how this one will work, but I have made the commitment. I am a jittery, crazy person- so this one may be tough- but I am going to try. Can't hurt.

LOVE: Hmmm.... we are just going to let this one go. We will see how this one progresses in combo.... with the focus on eat and pray, let's hope love finds the way for me.

Pray starts now- Eat starts in 1 week. I will keep ya posted- literally. EAT, PRAY, LOVE.. here I come.. stay tuned for more. Oh-and isn't Main Street just gorgeous? Love the mountains....

Product Junkie

It may be because I am ridiculously tired (have not slept very well recently- stress?) which has made me delirious... I am obsessing about the products I use. I titled this post Product Junkie. It should say Product Whore, but opted out for the title....

I know it's normal to really, really like certain types of products. For example, I love Creme de la Mer... the $125 plus face lotion--- I swear, it makes my skin baby soft and pretty and it lasts forever so very worth the $125!, Kiehl's facial lotion for when I travel, NARS blush in Orgasm or Sin (no, not just because of the names), Kiehl's lipbalm (in various flavors- you can find them in my purse, my various bathrooms, my briefcase..., OPI nail polish, Jan Marini facial gel and The Body Shop peppermint foot lotion are just a few of the "must haves" these day. That is pretty standard and girly, right? But is it weird that I am VERY particular about "general stuff" such as deodorant???

Hmmm.... I only will use Secret Crystal Clear Gel... and dental floss must be Oral B Silk, eye make-up remover must be Almay (the non-oily version), soap must be glycerin based (preferably from The Body Shop again), razors must be Soliel, and tweezers must be Tweezerman. Is that odd? Yep, I think I am obsessed. Can't help myself.

What next? I become obsessed with certain brands of toilet paper? I can only eat off of certain brands of paper plates? Nope, don't think I will go that far- I am simply particular about what I put on my body. Maybe I should change it from Product Junkie or Product Whore, to Snob? Yes, that makes a little more sense. I am a particular product snob. I admit it.

Time to go wash my face with Jan, moisturize with Kiehl's, and brush with.... hmmm... don't care as long as it tastes good and leaves my breath minty fresh! :) G'night early... hope tonight is the night I catch some zzzzzz's......

Thought Provoking Sunday

Forgive me as I get a little more philosophical than I usually do for my goofy blog updates (that most often consist of fashion, pop culture, and mindless fun...) but today my brain (for once versus my heart) is pushing me a little off kilter.

I am not one for New Year's Resolutions. I think they are stupid. If you want to lose weight, why not have a healthy life style everyday? If you want to save money, is January 1st really going to change your habits? I think not, so I just don't do them. With that said, it does not mean you can't make a change in your life if one day you just simply decide to do it. Mine just happens to be August 1. Just worked out that way (I won't post the why- just trust me- it was an event of monstrous proportions!)

I have been making a choice for the past 16 months that makes me really happy one day and really sad the next. No, I'm not a drug addict or an alcoholic- truly nothing for anyone reading my blog to worry about- but it is an addiction of sorts, I guess you could say. Anyway, I have continued to justify my choice every day nonetheless because I KNOW I deserve it- I work really, really hard, I genuinely do things in the spirit of caring about others, and I am a good person- so I deserve something to really makes ME happy, right? Or so I keep telling myself...

But, please know that my life is really, really great- I have everything I could ask for, I work hard for the joys of my life, and I spend quality time with and make memories with those who make me a better person. I am happy, healthy, and surrounded by amazing people. There is just this one thing that needs justification (in my head) because it makes me feel guilty all the time even though I could not stop it.

Today, in one full swoop, it came to a head. Just like that. Why? Well, I can't tell you why, but I can tell you it did. Change can happen just like that. And it did for me today.

So, with that, you can still expect to see silly pictures, fashion tidbits, and ridiculous posts that make no sense, but are for just for fun (that's what blogs are for, are they not!?) but you MAY notice a slight difference in how I show up... and yes, I may go through the ups and downs (SARA model, right?- shock, anger, resistance, acceptance)... but I commit to moving on from this decision that has been plaguing me for the last 16 months. It is always better if you state it out loud and make it known.

Who is ready for some change AND some fun? I know I am..... ready for an amazing August!!!
Thanks in advance for coming back from some more of the regular Darien's Details coming soon!!! I do believe August is one of the very best months of the year (my very best friend's birthday is in August for a start).... let's see... Let's go!

Just a Little Weekend Update

Sometimes the weekends without much planned are the best... nice to be home in the Bay area with warm weather and sunshine. Let's see what I accomplished... well, nothing, but it's been a good one!

Yesterday, Saturday, is always the best day of the week in my book. Slept in, enjoyed coffee in the sunshine, and watched a little "chick TV" before I headed to the gym. After the workout and a little more relaxation, I made it into Walnut Creek for a little shopping. The Creek is the best! If you saw my Facebook page, you know the intent was a wedding gift and I ended up shopping for myself too: GAP and Loft. Came away with some skinny jeans, work pants, a few work shirts, and fun accessories. Fun!

After shopping, I had some time to spare before Jarrod came home from work and we went out for dinner at the new joint in town. I (no clue why) decided to watch The Jersey Shore (God help me)- I became addicted for a few hours. Ugh! I now know what the hype is all about... it's like CRACK- unbelievable... not good, not talented, just simply unbelievable.... There are really people like that out there in this world?? ... er... New Jersey??? Wow. I confess. I watched 3 hours. Ugh again.

The good news is Jarrod and I went to the new "Jack's" for dinner. 1 hour wait was less than 40 minutes and the food was more than decent. What was best? the cute guys in the bar... new hot spots in Pleasant Hill attracts the "talent"- that's for sure. Will go back- that's definite. And will bring my single girls. :)

Today, after another workout, Jennifer and I met for breakfast at the usual Chow. Love that place on the weekends. Yummy. Nice to have some girl time over good food and coffee sittin' in the sun. Now just home enjoying a little more TV time on the couch before I pack and head to Portland for the week (don't like to travel Sunday, but one of the "fun" parts of the job). Lovely weekend. Nice after a long, busy work week, or should I say weeks. I know there are many more to come. That is why I do NOT take the unplanned weekends for granted. That's what life is all about. Take it as it comes. Simple pleasures...

Time to lay back and relax a little more over a Lifetime movie... :)

DRESSES!!!

I have had a fascination with shopping for dresses lately... I love wearing fun summer dresses- no pantyhose/nylons/tights needed, open toed shoes.... And they can be casual or dressy depending on how you accessorize. Fashion Fun!
Here are my 2 latest and greatest,. both bought at boutidques in Park City:
Rag & Bone from Cake Boutique- cute little sink funnel number with design on front and solid on the back except for one stripe across the waist
Mink Pink from Flight Boutique- sassy royal blue & black silk & cotton with zippered pockets
Love 'em both! And great deals to boot! Rag & Bone was $300 marked down to $145 and Mink Pink was only $65 to start. Can't go wrong... Now, for which shoes to wear... Hmmm....

Random Tuesday Thoughts

Maybe it's the Valium, maybe it's the vicodin..... but here are some VERY random thoughts for the day... This lovely Tuesday in July:

First, I had my 2nd eye surgery of Epi Lasek today. This seemed to go even better than the 1st. Jarrod, little brother, had the opportunity to watch and he said it was disgusting and gross. I can't imagine "scraping an open eyeball" could be anything but. Well, I feel good, give me a week, I will be ready to rock. Had them check eye #1 today and it's 20/20 vision. Never thought I would "see" the day... Medical technology is incredible.

What else.... well, I must go back to one of my very inaugural posts: animals and their brains. I swear, my kitty is smart. She was hiding today, so I yelled "treat!" and she came running for her milk. Just to test myself, I tried something again just now. She was hiding again, so I yelled several things- yelling her name, whistling (not good, but it got the job done), etc. Nothing. Then I yelled "treat" and there she was. See. Animals are smart. :) As a matter of fact, I think Casey is simply a genius. Yep, my cat.

Next, I seriously laugh out loud EVERY time I watch "Two & a Half Men". I am amazed by the writing- the lines are hilarious. Even if they are repeat episodes, I can't help but giggle relentlessly. Have you watched? If not, yes I know Charlie Sheen is no winner, but I don't care- this show is sensational. Made my Tuesday with their witty banter.

Up for debate... why am I and millions of other women (and some men...) so obsessed with ridiculously expensive shoes?? Between what I have spent on Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Christina Louboutain, and Brian Atwood, I could buy another house. But I just can't get enough. Ladies, what is it??? I know Carrie Bradshaw and friends have influence, but come on. I am serious plotting what my next purchase will be. Any suggestions??? My stomach is flipping with the excitement and anticipation... shoes, shoes, and more shoes!!!

Now that I am done thinking about expensive shoes (for the moment), why is it that all major bills happen at the same time??? House insurance (2 houses), car insurance, car tabs, timeshare annual dues... all of that is about $2,500 (and I am sure I am forgetting something) and now my association in San Fran is asking $2,300 for new garage doors! Wow- what to do... Does this happen to others? Maybe I should plan better... thanks heavens for savings accounts!

Last, I have been doing VERY well on my exercise and healthy diet/life-style for quite some time (seriously, I have not had my beloved french fries since January, ordered some the other night, and didn't even want them when they were served-- what has happened to me? I guess it's good- cravings have changed). So, reward night after enduring the eye surgery today. Choice: pepperoni pizza, Dr Pepper, and Ben & Jerry's Phish Food. Yum! Just waiting for the pizza to be delivered now and Jarrod to return from the grocery store with the soda and ice cream. This will be a good night and then back to the elliptical and balancing the 5 food groups tomorrow. Here we go...

Ladies and gentleman, life is good. If these are my worst dilemmas to ponder, I shall not complain... but I would love suggestions on the shoes :)

Very Odd 4th of July Holiday...

Hmmm... while it was fun, I had a very strange 4th of July holiday yesterday. Seriously, folks, I do NOT make this stuff up. How could I???

First, I woke up to a mocking bird outside my window at 7:30AM. Now I am not even sure if a mocking bird really exists in the world, but let me tell you, in this case, there is such a thing. I swear this annoying bird was repeating everything he heard from the night prior. I heard the repeat of my upstairs neighbor singing (and it ain't good!), whatI swear was the cast of Jersey Shore (which as you all know, ain't good either!!!), and a rendition of some cheesy Miley Cyrus song...

The day was intended to be very relaxing until the evening, but that changed when the fire alarms went off in the common areas of my condo around 10AM. So, outside we went.... it took the PC fire department about 12 minutes to arrive with 2 fire trucks, a police car, and an ambulance which for, which I would bet money, was someone simply using an emergency exit door while under the influence of Saturday July 3 alcohol (I was correct). BUT the firemen were SO CUTE- and nice! That was a very pleasant surprise. You expect fireman to be cute (aka calendar men) and they surely lived up to the expectation for this girl (sorry Mr Big).

Back to relaxation and movies on the couch.... wait... about 2 hours later... it went off AGAIN! This time I decided to take my time, get on my workout clothes, and head out to get away from the screeching. By the time I got back from working out, the cavalry was gone and a neighbor said it was the same. People- read the signs!!!

Next up.... heading down the road in PC, I come across a zebra, a buffalo, and a goat simply frolicking on the side of the road, grazing on grass. How random is that??? I wish I would have thought to take a photo- I may go back again today and check it out. Wow- that was strange. Made me smile. Not something you see everyday.

Last oddity of the day... Joaquin Phoenix. Not the cute JP of days gone by, but also not the crazy guy on David Letterman JP either--- kinda an in-between JP - little "odd", but typical celebrity sighting in PC these days..... Again, made me smile.

Well, was able to get back on the normality track to end the holiday with great PC Mountain Resort fireworks with some good wine. Nice way to end a "kinda weird" 4th of July.

Happy Birthday USA- I am honored to know you.

Reunion Fun

This will be a brief one today....

Did I seriously graduate from high school 20 years ago??? Wow. Last time I checked, I truly did not feel 38. The mirror may say something different, but my life and excitement to stay active say more like 28.

Actually, I was very pleased when several people over the past week or so told me they thought it was my 10 year reunion- and they were NOT kidding. Not sure if they wanted something from me or if they are blind (maybe they need eye surgery like me!?), but nonetheless it felt VERY good. I guess the exercise, monthly facials, and ridiculous amount of cash I spend on products that promote youth are doing something... :)

The most recent was when I was getting my hair done on Friday before the pre-party and the hairdresser kept repeating over and over again, "There is no way you are 38. This must be your 10th. Are you sure? You cannot be 38!" Makes a girl feel REALLY good. I'll take it.

As for the festivities... started out Friday night at Champp's with Jen, Amy, Lori, Torri, and Kristin before about another 20 or so old friends arrived for some cocktails and conversation. Aside from the crazy storms taking place outside, it was fun. Last night was the actual event and it was fun to see everyone- planned to stay for about 3 hours and ended up staying for the entire event- 6 hours! Guess time flew--- just like the 20 years.

I will post pics later, but thought I would just give a quick shout out for the good ol'20 year that took place this weekend. Not sure what to expect, but fun was had both nights. Could not have been possible without the girls.... you know who you are.

Off from MN to CA.....

Happy Father's Day!!!

This is a special Father's Day... really wanted to be here for my Dad as he is recovering from major back surgery. The plan was to clean the house this morning and make a dinner of his choice tonight.

This morning, I cleaned like mad--- bathroom, sweeping, dusting, vacuum, etc. When that was done, I went for a run and then had some "Girl Time" with Mom as we went out for lunch, to the Stone Arch Art Festival downtown (so bummed that I did not find anything I wanted to buy
:(...), and to Gap for some new summer t-shirts.

Back home, I fired up the grill (truly I have become a Grill Master over the past few months!) and put the weinies on the grill- along with Dad's other selections of potato salad, baked beans, and chips the dinner was complete. The rule was the potato salad MUST come from Santorini where they have the "famous Nicklow's Potato Salad" (truthfully, I tried a bite... must say I am NOT a fan. kinda gross if ya ask me).

A very nice Father's Day for the best Daddy ever. Rounded out a great weekend after a long week... Friday Happy Hour with Sue and Maggie, Saturday Julie and Ben's wedding followed by lots of wine with Andi and ending with a pop into Kelsey's welcome home party last night. Having today being able to spend time with Mom & Dad and help them out a bit made for a good weekend when things have been kinda rough lately.

Here's to a good week to come....

Epi-Lasek Eye Surgery

I finally did it!!!

I have wanted Lasik for YEARS, but was told it was not "conducive" to my eye structure, so I waited..... Went back after a few years and found out about Epi-Lasek (pronounced Lay-seek). It works for me! Yippee!!!

Here is the difference (from what I was told- please don't think I am the SME here):
* Lasik cuts a flap in your eye (gross) to fix the vision; tougher process, but immediate recovery
* Lasek uses a laser to scrape (gross again, but not as gross as an eye flap!) the cornea to fix the vision; easier process, but longer recovery

I had eye #1 (they do each eye one month about for recovery time) done yesterday and so far so good. About 10 minutes after the 3 minute procedure (but 1 hour prep to get to the 3 minute surgery), I was SUPER SENSITIVE to the light, but no pain- just crazy and loopy from the Valium and Vicodin they had me take right after. Got home, went to bed for 2 hours, woke up and sensitivity was gone, stayed up for 1 hour, went back to bed for another 2 hours, woke up for another hour to hang with my bro and watch Nurse Jackie (oh wait... LISTEN to NJ as I was not supposed to strain my eyes with TV or a computer yesterday), and went back to bed for the night for 8 hours. Woke up this morning feeling GREAT! Just a little blurry.

After my follow-up this morning, doc says my current vision is 20/40- just blurry- but should be 20/20 to 20/10 within 2 weeks. Yeah!!! And just wearing a contact in the other eye until my next surgery in July.

Wow- is this cool. So amazing. So glad I did it.

The only thing I have to do for the next few weeks is use 5, yes 5, different eye drops and take some antibiotics for 1 week to avoid infection. Not bad.

If you are considering doing some sort of laser eye vision improvement surgery, I highly recommend it. Just one thing: DON'T look for a deal. People, these are your EYES! You only have 2 and can't get more. Find a reputable surgeon and get it done.

Happy Seeing!

New Furniture and Such for PC!!!

So excited! Here is what part of my work bonus paid for! New furniture, TV, etc. for my digs in Park City, Utah. BTW... it's OUR (my condo and me- thanks) 1 year anniversary this month. Can't believe I have had this place for an entire year!? Still love it as much as I did on day 1.
I ended up with a suede mocha sleeper sofa (come visit!), comfy chair with ottoman, 2 glass tables, a bookcase/wine shelf (yes, filled with Artesa wine), and last but not least a beautifully mounted-on-the-wall TV. I am very content. Looks great and very comfy! Thanks Stick & Stones Furniture and Best Buy/Geek Squad!
Now if Dad can just fix my fireplace... :) All will be well in PC. Have a great weekend all.

NYC SATC Girls Weekend Comes to a Close...

What a fabulous weekend in NYC!!! I could not have asked for a better time with Amy in the City. Here is a run down of our fun:

Friday- Shopping on 5th Avenue, the big movie- Sex & the City 2 in Times Square, dinner at STK in the meat packing district

Saturday- Morning exercise in Central Park, Sex & the City tour (See below), more shopping, and SATC Premier Party at Club Velour

Sunday- Picasso exhibit at The Met, Green Day's American Idiot on Broadway (so awesome), more shopping, and dinner at Blue Water Grill in Union Square

3 fun-filled great days! Some other highlights include a few celebrity sightings... (we think)... the hot dog street vendor experiences, tons and tons and tons of walking the streets of NYC, cupcakes!, and relaxing in comfy Waldorf Astoria beds.

The SATC tour was so fun- if you are a fan, you may know some of the the stops.... The Pleasure Chest where the girls purchased their "rabbits", many restaurants such as The Coffee Shop, Sushi Samba, Buddakahn... Aidan's furniture shop, the church where Samantha met her Friar, Scout- the bar Steve and Aidan opened on Mulberry Street... many neat places to see. Great tour that took us all over Manhattan- Chelsea, the Village, etc. for almost 4 hours of pure enjoyment.

I will post pics very soon.... Can't wait for more! Fun, fun, fun!!!

Pre-NYC Post- SATC2

Helllloooooo MR BIG!!!

Ahhhh.... Carrie Bradshaw.... My hero

I am so very excited- chompin' at the bit to share what Lil' Amy and I have scheduled for the premier of Sex & the City 2 in NYC!!! We did the first premier 2 years ago in Hollywood- did the whole Shutter's on the Beach, Robertson Blvd thing..... but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will compare to this~

Thursday Night- Arrive via La Guardia and make our way mid-town for our digs for 4 days- The Waldorf-Asoria- ooh-lala!

Friday- THE BIG DAY! Premier of the movie followed by dinner at STK steakhouse- moo!

Saturday- The official Sex & the City tour (for all you fans, think the "Rabbit", Magnolia Bakery, Carrie's front stoop, Aidan and Steve's bar Scout, etc.) So fun! That night is the official premier party at Velour- a night club in the city. Tix could be purchased as... The Carrie, The Samantha, etc. Can you guess? We bought The Carrie. I am sure a cosmo WILL be included

Sunday- Green Day's American Idiot Rock Opera on Broadway!!! followed by sushi and such dinner at Blue Water Sushi & Grill- yum!

Monday- Sleep in and fly home.... :(

Of course, mixed in will be some shopping, more sight seeing, and I am sure some tasty libations. Did I say shopping??? I am like a kid counting down the days to Christmas or the last day of school. Or rather, like Carrie Bradshaw in front of Manolo Blahnik.... HELLO LUVA!

Keep your eyes open for the post-post. In the words of Jayzee and Alicia Keys... New York- It's what dreams are made of....

Just the past few days....

I have had a GREAT past several days and anticipate the next several will be just as sensational, so thought I would just brag about that today. Lucky me.

After the wonderful family excursion to Cabo, I spent the next 12 days in California working- nice to be home in the Bay area for a bit and enjoy my house, my little Casey, time with my brother, etc. But... travel must come. Luckily it is in the form of Utah and Minnesota. I spent 3 days that FLEW by in Utah working AND spending some time with Mr Big/SMITH... call him what you want... I do. That is as much as you get about that. Just know that I am still smiling and I will be until I see him again next weekend. Remember, nothing else about my love life here. Just know things ARE amazing.

There is something about waking up in Park City to the sight of snow-capped mountains and smelling that clean mountain air. It's incredibly refreshing. I can't get enough. Best purchase I ever made- that little condo that could.

I arrived in sunny Minnesota last night and met my very best friend Andi for dinner and wine. Love, love, love Ciao Bella (if you have read my previous posts, you know my obsession). Parmesan crusted shrimp, edamame, Margarita flatbread, and a little (or rather alot) of Sienna vino from back home. Then, to top it off, Andi's sweetheart of a husband had gourmet cupcakes waiting for my belated birthday when we got back to their house. Wow. And yum! Thanks Mark! And Andi too.

This morning I met Eve & Erica for breakfast at Jensen's where we enjoyed a few hours of tasty food and good conversation. I can't believe I worked with those girls at The Limited over 20 years ago??? Yep, still good friends. How cool is that?

Now, after a good workout to allow for all the meals out with friends, Mom and I are heading out for a movie "Letter's to Juliet" followed by dinner for a belated Mother's Day- just Mom and me! Just great way to start a weekend with friends and family. More to come tomorrow.....

Hope your fishing opener weekend is treating YOU well... go fish!

What is Your Music Genre of Choice?

I am sitting here on a beautiful Saturday morning, after a great hike with friends, downloading songs on my Ipod. Today: Hall & Oates, Orleans (you probably have no idea who that even it? Is it a band? A solo artist?), some new girl whose name has slipped my mind ("According to You" is the title of the cheesy song), and Tonic. Quite a mix, eh?

Got me to thinking about what GENRE of music I am drawn to. Pondering. Much thought given.... NO CLUE. I am at a loss. Take a look at a few of the artists I have on my Ipod now (and this is simply a sampling of the mix):

Prince
Santana
Neil Diamond
Indigo Girls
Michael Jackson
Jackson Brown
Toto
Taylor Swift
Beastie Boys
Carrie Underwood
Colbie Callait
Bush
Tim McGraw
Black Crowes
Richard Marx
Kenny Chesney
Jon Secada
Pointer Sisters

Huh... kinda weird. I know it goes without saying that my FAVORITES are GOO GOO DOLLS, BON JOVI, DIXIE CHICKS.... which is kinda weird in itself, but I think you can say I do not have a genre. Rap is out; all others are in I guess.

I love music, especially when it's a live venue. Can't get enough concerts.

With that, did you know Hall & Oates are coming to the Mountain Winery this summer? Could be fun.... Back to more downloads my friends. Enjoy your tunes.

What a wonderful trip to Cabo with the family! Below are a few snap shots of the fun times with Mom, Dad, and Jarrod....

The first pic is at Cabo Surf 7 Seas for dinner and drinks- watching the surfers. Tasty and fun!

Didn't get any pics from wave runners on Monday, but Tuesday was a blast on the ATVs... see Mom and me below...
